Desperado's Burgers Opening Tomorrow

'Cause we know you love to eat...

Desperado's Burgers, the flame-grilled meat joint opening up in the former Polly's space at 1342 U Street, will be opening tomorrow. Thrillist has the details about the place, including a shot of the interior--which looks NOTHING like Polly's, let me tell you. I bet your feet don't stick to the floor anymore, either.

From Thrillist:

The main attraction's their eight open flame-cooked, specially blended (sirloin/brisket) burgers, including the cheddar/Swiss/American 'Cheese Lover", a Swiss/avocado/spicy red pepper-sauced Southwestern Turkey, and a grilled onions/house-made chipotle mayo Cajun, seasoned with a spicy Cajun rub.

Just what I need...another excuse to consume red meat. In addition to the burgers, Desperado's, whose owners hail from New Orleans (so we're betting the aforementioned cajun burger is pretty swell) by a handful of beers, wines and cocktails. I couldn't find a website for them, but if anyone stumbles across it please post it in the comments.

Contrary to the swirling rumors, you do NOT get a special deal on your burger if you know all of the words to this.

Hi 14th & U -- I'm sorry for posting this as a comment to your blog today. I'm not familiar with blogspot and don't know how to just e-mail you directly, sorry. I wanted to let you know about a great jazz event this weekend. Can you e-mail me at: dcjazzjam@gmail.com. Thx!

It would be nice to have something like this on 17th Street. But we are under lock down over here. The smell of the meat cooking would have undoubtedly upset some of the area residents and they would have protested the operating license.

I always chuckle when I hear the Eagles' song and now the name of this restaurant.

The actrual spanish spelling is desesperado (masc) or desesperada (fem).

Spanish speakers must roll their eyes or shake their heads when they see/hear this "spanglish" word masquerading as real spanish.

Oh my god. I used to live in New Orleans. At the end of Bourbon Street, you take a right on Esplenade to the absolute best hamburger joint in the universe - Port of Call. These are the same owners. I hope they bring the same type of burger, because I literally have flown to New Orleans to get a Port of Call Burger and Monsoon (huuuge hurricane-type drink).

Edit: Left on esplenade... Too excited.

Unfortunately, while they are open, they are not serving food or their signature drinks yet. They said not until next week I believe. Hopefully soon, I miss Port of Call burgers!

Let's hope that they cart the sidewalk-blocking "art" off to the dump. That would be change that I could believe in.

Everything is connecting each other perfectly. Very nice place with perfect design. Simple, fresh authentic food, and full bar with its special drinks. I had perfect time.

Hmm. Methinks the above poster may be biased. I took my husband there last night around 5:45 for an early dinner. They don't have any fries in yet. No bacon, no avocado, no appetizers (except baked potatoes), and that is just from what we were going to order. There was only one other girl there, who was at the bar, and one other couple eating. Yet the music was so loud, my husband and I had to yell across the table to each other. Took forever to get our food. I also was not aware that the burgers came seasoned, even the plain ones, as it doesn't say so on their menu. I don't like Old Bay seasoning, and sure enough, there were parts of the burger that had large clumps of the powder on it. I'm not so sure of this place.

Not at all like the Port-of-Call I've been to. Cajun burger was not great at all and the portabello burger is not a burger at all- just a charred slab of mushroom with some spinach and lettuce. Boo- had my hopes up.... So much for getting some good ole NOLA flair in the U Street hood (my hood, and I'm from BR,LA)

Had high expectations based on good buzz, but was very disappointed. Burgers were mediocre, at best, and the service was anything but together. The bacon burger ordered medium rare was overcooked, had a single, miniature price of bacon, and the cheese consisted of a shredded, unmelted mess. They actually charge $2 for the shredded, unmelted cheddar on other burgers. Seriously, this was average bar food, and definitely not as advertised. They didn't even have the turkey burger. Pass.
