"Dakota Cowgirl" Space Continues to Take Shape

As you may recall from our earlier posting on this (as well as other sources) the long-anticipated opening of the new restaurants/bars "Birch and Barley" and "ChurchKey" in the old Dakota Cowgirl space has continually been pushed back. Originally slated for a late spring/early summer opening, the opening date was then pushed back to fall. Since it's now "fall" the obvious question is: where are they?

The answer is: currently going through the permitting process to construct a rooftop deck on their structure. An optimistic "best guess" for opening at this point is sometime in January, although that is a very tentative date. (In other words, I wouldn't hold my breath.)

Although the permitting process itself can be unnecessarily cumbersome and lengthy, the delays in the project have largely been self-imposed. First, the developer of the location (Neighborhood Restaurant Group) took some time to determine how, exactly, to make use of the space. After making the determination to operate two separate entities in the building--the aforementioned "Birch and Barley" and "ChurchKey"--they have now decided to move forward with plans for a rooftop deck.

It should be noted that the CDC voted unanimously to write a letter of recommendation in support of the project, and all were enthusiastic about the concept. For more information about the concept, you can check out our previous post on the topic (linked above) or Metrocurean's write-up from August.

Oh man, January?! I was hoping they would at least open up the bottom floor for now, since they're not going to be able to utilize a roof deck in the dead of winter anyways...

They have decided to tackle everything at once, rather than piecemeal. I can understand that, as undergoing a massive construction project on the roof while you're trying to serve patrons can be a real mess. that said, it sucks that the opening has been pushed back so much...and like I said I wouldn't bank on January either. Most likely March or April.

Great blog. I would recommend working in photos to your postings more often. A picture is worth a thousand words afterall. A photo is not needed for every post but presently none of the 15 posts on the main page of 14&You is accompanied by an image.

I include photos for many postings on the Mount Vernon Triangle blog and it doesn't take much more time at all. I find that I walk by most of the places I'm discussing on a fairly regular basis. I just need to remember to bring my small pocket sized camera with me every now an again. Another effective strategy is searching flickr for publically shared images.

Man! I used to love Hamburger Mary's--what a great dive. Dakota Cowgirl was great too, except they took their cheese stix off the menu! I hope this one is as fun as the last! Anyone know what the target clientele will be?

I think target will be those labeled as 'foodies' and curious. Foodies=curious. Curious=fun and open to...
