When PN Hoffman announced recently that they had acquired the Verizon building at the northwest corner of 14th and R streets, they indicated that they wanted to move swiftly with the project, and hoped to deliver by late 2012.
They weren't messing around.
I snapped this photo this morning of Hoffman's signs wrapping around the base of the building. In addition, they will be coming before the ANC's Community Development Committee this evening seeking support for their plans--presumably for exemptions or exceptions they will be seeking before BZA and historic preservation.

i really hope this will help that block of R street, i hate that even in our paradise of borderstan there's a block i consistently avoid, even in daylight, for safety's sake.
Cathy-you are SO racist!
I don't understand why Cathy is called a racist because she fears the 1400 block of R Street. That area has had a consistent and well documented problem with crime. She did not mention anything about race.
pretty sure anon#2 was being funny
I trust that the ANC meeting is tonight, Wed., not yesterday as the post says...?
Yes, sorry--the CDC meeting is this evening, not last night. The CDC meets in the Washington Plaza Hotel on Thomas Circle at 7 PM, if anyone wants to stop by.
I live on the 1400 block of R Street, NW - on the north side - and am very much looking forward to the development of buildings on the corner of 14th and R.
That being said, I should also mention that I feel quite safe, day and night, on this block. The fact that there are always people outside makes it difficult to really get away with any crime and it is my understanding that a lot of the crime in the area (thefts, break-ins, assaults) happen on the quiet streets where there are no witnesses.
Cathy, I appreciate that you trust your instincts and remain in areas where you feel safe. But, something to consider, the people on this block who may be committing crimes ARE mobile. They walk, have bikes, cars etc. and are not bound to conducting all of their daily activity within the block. We live in a city. It is wise to stay aware of your surroundings wherever you are.
hey jen, i totally get what you're saying, and it's certainly not as if i walk around the rest of the neighborhood talking on an iphone as i count large bills in my open wallet. ;)
but the statistics show a lot of crime activity on that block. and there's the recent history of gay bashings undeterred by nearby witnesses.
i'm too old and have been out too long to be afraid to hold my wife's hand as we walk down the street in our own city. i know where i'm not wanted and i'm sick of fighting.
at the same time, i'm thrilled that good people like you also live on that block, and i'm hopeful that it will change for the better in the relatively near future!
